Monument Owl

Casa Grande 7171_1000Case Grande Ruins National Monument in Arizona is a magnificent 650 year-old sandstone edifice standing more than 4 stories high. It was likely a place of great significance for the native farmers of the Sonoran Desert, located in the center of a network of irrigation canals. In an attempt to stop further erosion, the National Park Service has build a huge corrugated iron roof over the building.

Little did they know that they were actually building a place for Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) to roost.

There is a nest actually in the walls of the monument but this bird is taking time out between shifts on the nest and taking stock of the visitors who come to see its home.
